The Norwegian Association of Local and Regional Authorities (KS) coordinates projects in over 20 countries. About 50 of KS' members contributes actively, and KS has been involved in international activities since 1990.
KS is committed to the development of a stronger and more vital local democracy in Norway as well as abroad. Our objective is to support the development of an efficient and independent local government sector that attends the needs of the inhabitants.
The main tasks of KS international Projects are to support the Norwegian municipalities and counties in their cooperation and work internationally, as well as carrying out projects with other cooperation partners (e.g. KS' sister organisations).
Our core compentence and experience related to international projects are:
- Strengthening of local government associations
- Training programmes for locally elected councillors
- Local government development
- Strenghtening women's participation in local government
- Environment and sustainable development
- Support to decentralisation processes
- Coordination of municipal international cooperation
KS' International Projects are based on equal partnerships and mutual learning. The International Project Office in KS is a small unit of professional project managers, who draw on the wide experience and expertise of our members and of the KS staff.
